Why is my pet's hair shaved for an ultrasound examination?

Hair acts as a barrier and does not allow the ultrasound waves to penetrate the skin. This leads to a poor or completely black ultrasound image. Shaving ensures the ultrasound probe is in full contact with the skin. This creates a clear high-quality ultrasound image.
